Sterling Silver
Otelier only uses 925 sterling silver. This is the highest quality silver available. Sterling silver is one of the most beautiful and lustrous of all metals. However, it does tarnish and to ensure your pieces retain their beauty and shine for years to come, please follow these care instructions:
- Avoid exposure to chemicals: Remove your sterling silver jewellery before applying lotions, perfumes, or hair products. Chemicals in these substances can tarnish or damage the silver over time.
- Store properly when not in use: Silver should be kept absolutely dry. When not wearing your silver, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Storing it in a tarnish proof cloth or silver storage box can help prevent tarnishing.
- Clean regularly: Gently clean your sterling silver jewellery with a soft cloth to remove dirt, oils, and fingerprints. For stubborn dirt or tarnish, use a mild soap and water solution, and carefully pat dry with a soft cloth.
- Polish as needed: Use a specially formulated silver polishing cloth or a silver polishing solution to restore the shine to your jewellery. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.
- Avoid exposure to moisture: Remove your sterling silver jewellery before swimming, showering, or participating in activities that may expose it to moisture. Moisture can accelerate tarnishing and cause damage to the silver.
- Handle with care: While sterling silver is durable, it can still scratch or become damaged if handled roughly. Avoid wearing your jewellery during activities that may subject it to impact or abrasion.
Solid 9ct Gold
Our gold jewellery is crafted exclusively in solid 9ct gold. It is renowned for its soft golden hue and enhanced durability due to its alloy composition.
Please be aware that regardless of the karat or type of precious metal, signs of wear may develop over time as you wear your jewellery in your daily life, accruing natural marks along the way.
To keep your gold jewellery looking its best, we recommend soaking it in warm soapy water and gently buffing it dry with a soft anti-tarnish microfibre cloth.
For pieces crafted from 9ct gold, avoid exposure to chlorine chemicals commonly found in swimming pools, hot tubs, and household cleaning supplies. The alloy composition of 9ct gold (which includes pure gold and metals like copper, silver and zinc) makes it highly susceptible to damage and erosion from chlorine exposure, which can weaken the jewellery and increase the risk of breakage.
In some cases skin can react with these other alloys. We recommend following the below easy steps to help reduce your skin's reaction with the gold. Always take care to avoid moisturisers and makeup from remaining under your piece. If you are engaging in physical activities that can cause you to sweat, we recommend removing your jewellery beforehand.
Tarnishing
Tarnishing is a natural result of metal oxidising, influenced by various factors such as perfumes, moisturisers, tanning lotions, cleaning chemicals, and even your skin's acidity. Oxidation occurs when metals react with air exposure, forming a layer of oxide.
Please note that tarnish is not a manufacturing fault. It can be easily removed using a silver polishing cloth. However, avoid over-polishing plated items, as this can cause the plating to wear down more quickly over time.
Proper storage is essential to prevent tarnishing. We recommend using purpose-made jewellery boxes for the best care. Avoid storing your items in our gifting or shipping boxes—these are designed for transit protection only and are not suitable for long-term storage.

General Care Instructions
To ensure the quality and longevity of your jewellery, please follow these general care instructions:
- Keep your jewellery away from saltwater, chlorine, soap, perfumes, and creams. Remove before exposure to these substances to prevent damage.
- Avoid excess water and steam, and refrain from wearing your jewellery in the shower, bath, or while swimming.
- Protect your jewellery from extreme sunlight and temperatures.
- Remove before engaging in household cleaning, gardening, or any activities involving chemical sprays. Avoid wear during sporting activities or physical exercises to prevent accidental damage.
- Store in a safe, dry place when not in use. For long-term storage, consider investing in a professional anti-tarnish jewellery box.
- To clean and polish use an anti-tarnish microfibre cloth. Avoid using harsh cleaning agents or abrasive materials.
Everyday Considerations
Be aware of all contact with your jewellery; delicate pieces can be caught on clothing or handbag straps without being noticed. Your jewellery should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.
Allergies
Please note that Otelier does not take responsibility for any allergies or reactions that occur whilst wearing our pieces. We highly recommend researching product materials prior to purchasing.
Black metal discolouration is a common effect of tarnishing due to ones’ skin acidity. This is easily removed with a jewellery polishing cloth.
